Narragansett Bay Post CAPT John Hannigan Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament

What: CAPT John Hannigan Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament (Four-man "Best Ball" regular scramble)

Where: Triggs Memorial Golf Course, 1533 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence, RI

Cost: $100 per person for golf and lunch or $35 lunch only fee. Sponsorships are $600 and include registration for four players, signage and recognition at the event and in the NB Post SAME Newsletter and website. 

Includes: Greens fees, cart, Tailgate BBQ Lunch (1300 - 1500). $10 of the lunch fee goes towards the scholarship.

Speaker:        Ted Spinard, P.E./QDC

Ted currently serves as the Development Services Director for the Quonset Development Corporation (QDC) and is responsible for planning, engineering, construction management, and technical services. Ted will be joining us to speak about the QDC’s ongoing $90-Million Pier 2 Infrastructure Improvements Project at the Port of Davisville (the Port) located in the Quonset Business Park.

During the past decade, the Port has grown into one of the top Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ports for finished vehicle logistics, consistently ranking in the top 10 in all of North America. Pier 2 is the primary pier used in the Port and was constructed in the 1950s by the US Navy, measuring 1,200-feet-long by 650-feet-wide. The pier is well beyond its design life and is in need of rehabilitation in order to remain operational. As part of his presentation, Ted will be discussing the proposed improvements effort, including the upcoming design/construction.

The presentation will focus on the unique structural design challenges associated with the design of this new landmark building on campus.  Structural design topics will include the high capacity pile foundation system, lateral force resisting system, and the exposed-to-view steel trusses and connection detailing.  The presentation will also focus on the importance of the collaboration between OEI and Ballinger structural engineers, the enhanced coordination between the structural engineers and the construction manager/steel fabricator, and the high level of importance assigned to communication between the design team and the special inspectors on site.

Erik Nelson, Principal, at Structures Workshop in Providence, RI, will present the talk titled, "The Forests and Wood Construction in the US".  He will describe wood production practices from the 1600s until now and how our relationship with the trees has changed, the industrialization of the wood process, why and where wood is developed (for example, why do we not use our local wood).  Also, he will discuss hardwood vs. softwood use in New England, and innovators and innovations in design and use.  At the end he will examine which forests are under threat, which are thriving, and ways to use local wood in our construction projects.
