Erik Nelson, Principal, at Structures Workshop in Providence, RI, will present the talk titled, "The Forests and Wood Construction in the US". He will describe wood production practices from the 1600s until now and how our relationship with the trees has changed, the industrialization of the wood process, why and where wood is developed (for example, why do we not use our local wood). Also, he will discuss hardwood vs. softwood use in New England, and innovators and innovations in design and use. At the end he will examine which forests are under threat, which are thriving, and ways to use local wood in our construction projects.
